Pharmacological Properties
The drug action is due to the combined effect of extracts it contains:
Heart-leaved moonseed (Tinospora cordifolia, Guduchi) has adaptogenic and radioprotective effect; protects brain cells from hypoxia. It is used for treatment of jaundice, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. Tinospora cordiofolia improves glucose tolerance; lowers high sugar level in blood, its effect is similar to the insulin action. In addition, it exhibits an antioxidant effect and lowers blood lipids.
Terminalia arjuna (Terminalia arjuna, Arjuna) bark contains tannins, including 15% tannic acid, bioflavonoids that have a strong antioxidant effect, glycosides, calcium carbonat, and traces of alkali chloride; in the bark there is a large amount of calcium salts, some magnesium and aluminum salts, about 12% pyrocatechols that strengthen the blood vessel walls, organic acids, saponin triterpid responsible for diuretic properties of the herb and phytosterols. The bark is astringent; it stimulates the heart function, and has a tonic effect. The mechanism of action is probably related to glycosides and flavonoids contained in the herb.
Intellect tree (Celastrus paniculatus, Jyotismati) is widely used in Indian folk medicine in patients with memory disorders, sleep disorders, and epilepsy. The antioxidant properties of this herb, as well as its neuroprotective action on neurodegenerative diseases are experimentally confirmed. Antioxidant properties of intellect tree and the other herb - Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) contained in the drug contains are exhibited by anti-stress, immunomodulatory, and memory-improving properties. The herb improves memorizing ability, widely used in patients with amnesia; it has neuroprotective action on stress and stroke and cardioprotective action – on myocardial infarction.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root activates the hypothalamus function that plays an important role in cognitive and memorizing processes.
Indian Nard (Nardostachis jatamansi, Jatamansi) root belongs to the family Valerianaceae. It eliminates insomnia and irritability, has anticonvulsant properties. Indian Nard has neuroprotective action and is effective in treating focal cerebral ischemia
Asian Centella (Centella asiatica, Madukparni or brahmi) grass contains glycosides: indocentelloside, brahmoside, brahminoside, asiaticosides, thankuniside and isothankuniside. It is used to improve memory and in stomach disorders. Asian Centella has tranquilizing, anabolic, anti-protozoal and antispasmodic properties. The herb enhances memory, concentration, and mental abilities. It increases intellect, facilitates memory improvement, and strengthens the immune system.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) root: major active component – glycyrrhizin. The herb is used for treating asthma, acute and chronic bronchitis, and chronic cough as well. It beneficially affects the immune system and has antioxidant activity. Licorice root is applied as a mild anti-inflammatory for arthritis and rheumatism, and used to treat stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining, duodenal ulcers and esophagus ulcers, heartburn, and oral cavity ulcers. It contains isoflavone phytoestrogens, such as formononetin, glabron, neo-liquiritin, A and B gyspa-glabridins. Licorice root reduces mucosal irritation, strengthens the immune system, and enhances body resistance to infection.
Adhatoda Vasica (Adhadota vassica, Vasa) is an antispasmodic, diuretic, tonic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, expectorant and antiasthmatic medication with a calming effect.
