Pharmacological Action
Sonmil is a sedative, hypnotic, and antihistamine drug. The active ingredient - doxylamine is a medication that belongs to ethanolamines and has strong sedative and M-anticholinergic action. Doxylamine blocks H1-histamine receptors. The drug’s active ingredient penetrates the central nervous system, improves sleep quality, and facilitates sleep. Sonmil does not affect the sleep phases.
After peroral intake doxylamine is quickly absorbed in the digestive tract. Sonmil’s active ingredient penetrates through the hemato placental barrier and hematoencephalic barrier, and is excreted in breastmilk. Doxylamine is metabolized by the liver.
Indications
Sonmil is used to treat patients suffering from sleep disorders and insomnia.
Use
Sonmil is intended for peroral administration. The drug should be taken 15-30 minutes before bedtime. After taking the drug the recommended duration of sleep is at least 7 hours.
Adults usually take 1/2 tablet.
If necessary the dose is gradually increased.
The maximum dose is 2 tablets of Sonmil.
The duration of treatment is from 2 days to 2 month.
Side Effects
Sonmil is normally-tolerated. The most common side effect was drowsiness in morning times, as well as dizziness and loss of coordination when making sudden movements within several hours after awakening. When such side effects are observed it is recommended to reduce the doxylamine dose.
Contraindications
Sonmil is contra-indicated in patients with individual hypersensitivity to doxylamine.
It is prohibited to use Sonmil in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma and difficult urination (caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia).
Sonmil is not used in pediatric practice.
Pregnancy
Sonmil is not used to treat pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Interaction with other drugs
When combined with other medications Sonmil potentiates action of barbiturates, clonidine, narcotic analgesics, benzodiazepines, neuroleptics and ethyl alcohol on the central nervous system. Combined use of doxylamine with ethanol
